Since originally publishing this article, the Fenway Sports Group have removed the Clint Dempsey story from their website.

Huge news for Liverpool fans on Wednesday. Maybe…

According to the America media outlet New England Sports Network (NESN), Clint Dempsey has completed a transfer from Fulham to Anfield.

As reported by NESN.com, “The Boston Red Sox are celebrating Fenway Park’s 100th Anniversary this season, and Liverpool FC is going to be a part of the historic summer. The football club will be partaking in a three game North American tour, which includes a stop in Boston for a game at Fenway Park. The team has added Fabio Borini and Clint Dempsey to a team that game within a game of winning the FA Cup.”

NESN have also released a supporting video news report which says the Reds have signed Dempsey.

But can the reports be believed?

Whilst the NESN article is being spread like wildfire across the internet, Fulham has gone on the record this Wednesday to deny that any deal has been completed. Yet depite the Cottagers firm rejections, a tsunami of voices seem to believe that the Dempsety deal – even if not done yet – is a 100% dead-cert to happen.

The American forward as been rumoured with a move away from Craven Cottage following a magical 2011-12 season in which he registered 28 goals and 7 assists in 57 matches for both club and country. Moreover, last season was a record-breaking campaign for Clint.

Firstly, the 29-year-old became the first American to score a hat-trick in the Premier League during the defeat of Newcastle (which was in fact his second hat-trick of the season after he struck three goals against Charlton in the FA Cup). Second, Dempsey became the first American to reach 50 career goals in England’s top flight.

Such goalscoring prowess is exactly the what was wrong with Liverpool’s campaign last term.

Only Luis Suarez managed to reach double figures in the goal scoring stakes at Anfield in 2011-12, whilst only five other players scored 5 goals or more (and it’s looking likely that four of them – Bellamy, Maxi, Kuyt and Carroll – will not be at the club come the start of the season).

Should the NESN reports prove accurate, Dempsey could prove to be a major coup for Liverpool in the upcoming season.
