Chelsea v Liverpool FA Cup Final Betting Preview
FA Cup finals have been cagey affairs over the past few years. Four of the last five FA Cup finals have been settled by a 1-0 scoreline. All of the last five have been settled by a one goal winning margin. So that is a trend which is going to probably be worth tracking for Saturday’s final when we look at Chelsea v Liverpool betting. Earlier in the Premier League season, Liverpool came away from Stamford Bridge with a 2-1 win, and on paper, it doesn’t look as if there is going to be too much to separate the two sides at Wembley. Both head to the FA Cup showcase on the back of league defeats, both have struggled for goals and both have defences which can stand up to a barrage. So who will conquer Wembley?
Both sides go into the match on the back of disappointing Premier League results and Chelsea will be looking to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on Wednesday. They looked tired during that game and will need to sharpen up if they are to win the FA Cup for a seventh time, with Bet 365 going 4/6 on them to lift the trophy.
Seven-time FA Cup winners Liverpool, who are evens to lift the trophy, endured an embarrassing 1-0 loss to Fulham at home on Tuesday night, where Kenny Dalglish opted to field some of his fringe players. None of the second string impressed in that match and expect Luis Suarez and co to return to the starting line-up.
Suarez will be itching to start after he scored a brilliant hat-trick in his last match against Norwich last weekend. The Uruguayan is 11/2 joint-favourite to score first on Saturday. It could also be worth backing Didier Drogba to score first at 11/2 as he has scored seven in his last seven appearances at Wembley, including in three FA Cup finals. Meanwhile, former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has enjoyed an upturn in form of late, scoring four in his last three, and he is a tempting 13/2 to score last against his former club.
Like Torres, Chelsea have enjoyed a fine run of form of late, although the defeat to Newcastle means their hopes of a top four finish in the Premier League have been dashed. They do still have the small matter of a Champions League final to look forward to though and they are hopeful that David Luiz and Gary Cahill will be fit this weekend.
The return of the two centre backs could be crucial for a side that have kept just two clean sheets in ten matches, while Liverpool have fared little better, keeping one clean sheet in ten, and both teams to score is 8/11 odds on.
The cup competitions have saved Liverpool’s season as their Carling Cup win and run to the FA Cup final has masked a dismal league campaign. They have won just three of their last nine matches in all competitions, although they have won both Chelsea V Liverpool fixtures so far this season.
Not too much can be read into those results for a one-off final like this though and we fancy Chelsea could just edge it, with paddy power offering 16/5 for Chelsea to win by a margin of one goal. It could be a tense and cagey affair early on, which makes the half-time draw and full-time Chelsea win look very tempting at 5/1 in the double result market.
Ultimately Chelsea might just have too much for Liverpool as they continue to ride the crest of a wave under Roberto Di Matteo and, with Drogba back in the starting eleven, they could nick it, with the correct score of 2-1 available at 17/2.
